Sea cucumber?

Post by Kookaburra »

All along, I thought that the sea cucumber is actually a vegetable-fruit. I was surprised to find out that it is actually an animal! Can we eat it raw?

Namako in japanese.
I think it depends on the specie, as some solely feed on plankton (safe),
whereas specific species may ingest Angiostrongylus cantonensis.
They are available in some sushi restaurants.
They seem to be tasteless, somewhat like calamari; rubber-like (due to the leathery skin) and soft and crunchy at the same time.

In China, sea cucumbers are farmed in artificial ponds.
Alaskan wild sea cucumbers are caught by divers, are larger and seem to be higher in nutrients than farmed Chinese sea cucumbers.
