How long can you keep raw fish?

Post by Kookaburra »

I am planning to buy 1kg of raw salmon fillets. My average intake per day is 125g, so it will take me 8 days to finish them. Can they last for 8 days in the refrigerator?

What happens if you eat raw fish that are no longer fresh? Do they lose any of their nutrients and omega 3 makeup?

I would freeze them and defrost one each day.
Every food loses nutrients when in contact with air, that's why we'd prefer fresh. Fresh is also relative, as most fish we eat isn't fresh anymore, if we define fresh as 'just caught'.

Usually when we have new fish, we divide it in portions, keep the portion for next day in the fidge (covered ofcourse, and somewhere low, as it's the coolest there), the portion for that day out of the fridge and the rest in the freezer. To my taste, fish (salmon at least) won't last longer than that. It just doesn't taste fresh anymore, and in that state, it repulses me... My mom, though, is less picky then I am. So it can be longer in your case.

It also very much differs per specie; mackerel lasts 1 to 2 days,
whereas tuna lasts almost a week.
8 days for salmon?
Definitely not.

No indeed, it would have been better when I said "it can be a day or so longer in your case".

1 to 2 days, very much depending on its original freshness, naturally.

What happens if I eat meat that isn't fresh anymore? Will I get sick? I have been eating raw meat for a year plus.

Hard to predict.
If you like raw chicken, you will like raw turkey better.
It tastes a bit less bland.

That depends on how much its not fresh anymore, and if it contains very high levels of specific bacteria.
For me, it maximally results in total bowel emptying.
