Protein just from egg yolks

Post by doventin »

Is it ok to get all animal protein from egg yolks? Say 12 (organic) egg yolks (about 35 g. protein) and the rest from fruits and nuts. It's much more convenient where I live, and pretty much the same price as salmon.

I think it would be good to mix up some salmon here and there then, as it adds nice things to the diet like omega 3 fats.

Yes, fish and egg yolks are a bit complementary regarding omega-3 fats:

Salmon contains a lot of EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid; 20:5 n-3).
Egg yolks contain all the omega-3 fats except for EPA.
The body will convert some (+/- 5%) of the available LNA into EPA (and EPA into DHA when required).
By consuming DHA (as in egg yolks and fish), less LNA is required for EPA synthesis.

Just as LNA, LA is also an essential nutrient; LA is converted into arachidonic acid and some prostaglandins.
Contrary to salmon, egg yolks do contain a lot of linoleic acid (LA; n-6), and the linoleic acid (LA; n-6) : linolenic acid (LNA; n-3) ratio in egg yolks is in accordance with the RDA.

So are the ratios something that should be kept daily, or is it fine to consume just egg yolks during the week and then have some salmon in the weekends?
