anti-fungi/bacteria etc in coconut oil?

Post by johndela1 »

I have read that coconut oil kills parasites, bacteria, fungi, and viruses. If there is any truth to this is sounds like coconut oil is anitibiotic in nature and is toxic.

Are these just myths? Or is coconut high in some kind of toxin? If so, it sounds like it should be used medicinally but not as a regular part of the diet.

If it is true it will be in a journal somewhere. If its not there then its just hearsay...

I don't like hearsay...

I don't know if I would invest everything in what a scholarly journal has to say. I have read many articles in journals within my own field that have incorrect information, which often ends up with conclusions that are less than accurate. Moreover, journal publications, just like any other organization, more often than not have their own biases.

I found that methylated coconut oil has toxic properties (replacement of a hydrogen atom in the methyl group of fatty acid methyl esters, induced by alkaline transmethylation), but thats irrelevant. (Foley DH, Frances SP. J Am Mosq Control Assoc. 2005 Dec;21(4):477-9.
It seems though that a certain ratio of specific saturated and unsaturated fatty acids has toxic properties for specific micro-organisms, which is not due to toxic compounds in the oil. (Garg AP, Muller J. Mycoses. 1992 Nov-Dec;35(11-12):363-9.
