Acidic Oranges

Post by Ducky »

Its pretty hard to buy sweet oranges these days. They are always acidic.

Does it mean they are picked before they are ripe enough? I guess.

Its kinda puts me off of them. I dont really like to buy anymore.
Even if you pour some sugar on them they just dont taste right.

I prefer mandarins. They are sweeter most of the time.

Anybody feels the same?

That depends on what the wholesaler buys abroad. The best oranges go to those countries where they pay the most (which seems to be Russia these day; they buy virtually all the cuban oranges). At the moment i get oranges of excellent quality here.
There isnt a more expensive shop where you can buy better quality oranges?

Yes, they are. Even the best oranges are picked before fully ripe. Depending on how early they are picked, and on transportation conditions, they may never fully ripe anymore, and taste awful as a result.

Yes, there is no way of disguising that bitterness and acidity; its terrible.

Go with the season; buy the best available at the moment; if thats mandarins right now, then buy mandarins. They are perfectly balanced fruits as well (regarding nutrient make up).
What tastes better IS better; unripe fruits have a very poor nutrient make up.

A bit late, but letting them ripen for a week (or two) also helps.

Yep I do, but they might just go from very acidic to less acidic I guess. :?

Yes, they do ripen a bit; I always receive 10 boxes of oranges per shipment from my supplier (he even carries them into my house!), and the last oranges always taste better than the first ones.

Yes i gotta admit they really do ripen.

But it takes weeks or even months.

But after that time they are quite enjoyable to eat and not acid any more.

Gentlemen, I stand corrected. :)

RRM, you drink a lot of orange juice, right? But what about the teeth? Too much isn't bad for them?

Yes, a LOT and i think that its bad.
My teeth still look and feel good though.
Its just that if it is very bad, i feel it still doesnt outweigh the beneficial effects of drinking a lot of juice, which is a very easy and effective way to not ingest bad stuff from cooked foods.
Im simply taking that risk, and if my teeth will crumble down, i will go to the dentist and have me some nice caps put on them. Then im healthy, looking good and im also having a beautiful smile...

...but also a lot poorer (at lest here in Norway the dentist is a really expensive place to go!) and in serious pain (I HATE dental surgery!)! ;)

But yeah, it might be a risk worth taking...

Wow...
I received a very bad shipment (10 boxes) of bitter and acidic oranges 2 months ago,
and i decided to just store them outside for a while to see weather they would taste
good enough after a while.
Guess what?
Now they taste perfect!!! :D :D :D
