Pain after watermelon

Post by dcboyer02 »

Has anyone else experienced pain after eating watermelon?

It seems to happen to me a lot when I eat it. It doesn't last that long but I get tightness in my chest, back and or neck often after eating it. Maybe its gas? I can't tell.

I've looked online trying to find this out and have read a couple different theories on it.

Someone said not to eat it in the morning, someone else said don't eat the flesh close to the rind, just the soft parts.

Does anyone know why this happens?

Thanks

Was that the only thing you had eaten up to that point in the day? Is this a new thing for you, dcboyer02?

Well, I had a date and a banana before that this morning.

But no, its not a new thing, its happened many times before when I've eaten watermelon.
I googled the symtoms and it seems to happen to a lot of other people after watermelon too but was just trying to narrow down the reason.

Could be an allergy, could be a fructose issue. I wouldn't want to lead you down the wrong path, but I would suggest consulting a specialist if you can't sort it out and it's really bugging you. How soon after consumption does the pain present on average? Were you taking olive or coconut oil as well?

It could be a salicylate intolerance. Watermelon are high in salicylates. If you want to test this theory, which I would strongly recommend, have a couple of whole oranges first thing in the morning upon waking. Oranges are very high in salicylates. If you have a problem, you will experience similar symptoms within a short period of time. Be sure not to eat anything with or after the orange for a good while (at least an hour I would say). Do you get brain fog and irritability as well after eating the watermelon?

It may also be an sensitivity for specific amines such as serotonin.
This usually subsides if you eat that fruit frequently
(as the body increases production of the required enzymes).

I love watermelon and its not enough of an issue for me to stop eating it, so I'll experiment with it more, it might have something to do with how ripe it is because the next day I had some and didn't have that problem. And it was similar to the day before, I'd had a banana before and it was in the morning and didn't get that tightness in my chest that time.

Watermelon isn't high in amines, it's high in salicylates. It would perhaps only be high in amines if it were over-ripe (was it?). How soon before you ate the watermelon did you eat the banana? Did you eat banana on the occasion before when you did experience a reaction? Sometimes it takes a while -several minutes to hours - for sensitivity (different from allergy) reactions to begin. This is why so often one thing can be mistaken for another.

It was not over ripe, if anything under-ripe, kinda hard. But no matter how it is it always happens right away within like 10 minutes of eating it.

Yes, both days I had a banana and then watermelon, both days in the morning, one time it happened next time it didn't. I'm not sure really how long after the banana I ate the watermelon, but within an hour both times

Just dont eat the flesh closest to the skin, and you will be fine. (if you dont have issues similar to djkvan)/
The closer you get to the skin / peel, the less good it tastes,
so simply 'listen' to that.

Do the rind contain anti-nutrients? Sometimes there are little flakes of rind/skin on the melon flesh after cutting. I guess they do no harm?

No 'harm', but they dont taste good,
and contain more anti nutrients, indeed.
