Making orange juice: presses VS extractors

Post by tjfillion »

I just purchased a centrifugal juicer and I see what people mean about the juice going bad rather quickly. Luckily the packaging was really easy so it's definately possible for me to wash it, repackage it, and return it no problem.

But before I do that, I still don't understand how manual presses work. I know they destroy the fruit the least so the juice lasts longer and they are not electric and are cheaper.

What is the step-by-step process to getting 3 quarts of juice with a press and how long does this take?

(ex: Electric would be take blank lbs of oranges, peel them, put them in juicer and then clean up. Takes like 20 minutes and quicker if you're a master peeler)

Do the oranges have to be peeled before using a press?

I read about one where the fruit had to be cut into pieces first ... is this the case in all of them?

What is the difference between manual and hydrolic?

Finally, the manual pressing of the fruit ... is it difficult? Does it require a lot of force or does leverage make it really easy?

Thanks, sorry I know people ask about juicers all the time but I couldn't get a good visual on how a manual press works.

hmm, there is a thread somewhere where we talk about this, please search for it, and you'll find the answers to your questions. (I used a hand press for many years)

Alright, so by hand it takes people between 45 - 90 minutes and the electric juicers don't seem to lower the shelf life of the juice? That's what I seemed to get out of other threads.

And there's more if you browse through that QandA forum.

Personally I can juice 4L in ~20-25 minutes with a hand juicer.
