papaya; not in large amounts?

Post by johndela1 »

I read in one of the articles here that I shouldn't eat papaya in large amounts. Why is papaya different that other fruits?

It contains specific enzymes that may inhibit digestion. Papaya also contains quite some serotonine, which cannot be utilized as such and needs to be decomposed. (at the blood-brain barrier, tryptophan is converted into the neurotransmitter serotonine) This may cause some difficulty if not sufficient serotonin-decomposing enzymes are available.

Yes, a number (guava, for example)
But this also differs per person, as the sensitivity to such compounds varies greatly. So, for some it may be lots of differen fruits, whereas for others it may not even be one.

There is no guideline, as that will differ per person and per day.
But your body will clearly tell you. If the fruit starts tasting less good, that is a signal from your body; a signal that it has ingested quite a bit of such an antinutrient.

No, not at all. It just means that you should listen to your taste very carefully. Variation is key here; if your appetite for a certain fruit is decreasing, switch to other.

I can eat 4 or 5 kg of papaya at once. It is so delicious and no bad taste ever occurs. But when I eat berries for example, I sometimes want to spit them out after only consuming a few.

i've read that there is much GMO papaya on the market today. i know for those of you living in europe, this will not affect you. for those of us in the U.S. we should watch out. it's easy if you remember to check PLU #'s.

anyone living in hawaii should be extra careful as 3/4 of their papaya crops are now GMO crops

RRM ,
whenever i eat papaya , it leaves my body more or less undigested : so in , so out … : /
papaya’s specific enzymes should actually help with digestion ( esp. protein ) , no ?
i always stop eating as soon as i've reached a "stop" and the taste becomes unpleasant ...
is there a way to make papaya work for me ?

all other wai food seems to digest just fine …

The papaya already works for you,
and your body clearly tells you how much it tolerates.
Please do not try to fool your body.
Your body probably knows best.
Eating right is very much about listen to your body carefully.
The body has many checks and balances that need to prevent any overload of something.
