natural plant toxins in fruits

Post by johndela1 »

I found a website ( http://www.geo-pie.cornell.edu/issues/toxins.html ) that
lists toxins found in plants. Most of the toxic plants are vegetables. I
was surprised to find figs and tomatoes in the list.

Here is a snipit if the list:

Toxin:..................... plant:
Glycoalkaloids ...........Potato, tomato
Oxalate .................... Spinach, rhubarb, tomato
Phenols ..................... Most fruits and vegetables, cereals, soybean, potato
Coumarins ................Celery, parsley, parsnips, figs

Would it be best to avoid these fruits for the some of the same reasons
we don't eat vegetables?

I guess I need to accept Phenols, they seem to be in most fruits.

No. Oxalate and glycoalkaloids, for example, are particularly found in unripe tomatoes. (the green parts; also very much in green potatoes)
Coumarins are particularly found in the seeds of fruits.

I assume the answer is obvoiusly yes but I want to make sure.

The reason why vegetable oils are not recommended are for similar reason as to why vegetables are not recommened including the fact that they contain antinutrients, right?

Yes, but also the fatty acid composition is very important. Linseed oil, for example, contains way too much linolenic acid.
