Budgets

Post by Mr. PC »

I was wondering if people could create a food budget; how much of what we eat and prices, for a week/month or whatever amount of time.

Olive Oil 1L/month $10 7Eur
OJ/FJ 60L/month $70 49Eur
Avocado 30/month $30 22Eur
Banana 90/month $50 37Eur
Egg 90/month $45 31Eur
Fish(frozen) 5/month $10 7Eur
Nuts 20/month $12 8Eur
Coconut Oil 750mL/month $15 12Eur
Omega3 Oil 100mL.month $10 7Eur

Rice Noodles $10
Tomato Sauce $15
Red Wine $20
Butter $5
Cream $10

So in total that would be $312/month I spend on food. I'm thinking I'll cut the Wine, and maybe add sugar and water to my juice.
Also these are VERY rough, (I'm not good at keeping track of things). I'm going to start keeping receipts and maybe have a more accurate budget for next month. Does anything here seem out of wack?
Please if you don't mind anyone adding theirs would really help me.

Thanks.

I'm living in Singapore, so this is in SGD, but mine is less than $250. I suppose that is due to the cheap availability of equatorial fruits; bananas, papaya, coconut, etc.

That seems very low, it equated to about $180 USD/Canadian, although I re-calculated based on my recent receipts and I actually came to $175 / month Canadian, which is about 130 Euro.

Here is my breakdown

juice = $25 for 25L (because of the dollar day sale for FiveAlive)
Rice = $13.60
salmon = $12
avo = $25
fruit = $15.00
egg = $16
vegi = $6
butter = $12
cream = $12
Olive Oil = $25
Coconut Oil = $15

Although half of this info is from when I was on my diet of 90% Five Alive, when No Frills had their Dollar Day sale. Now that my teeth are rotting I've radically altered my diet (hence all the rice).

I'm interested in individual item costs, because I don't worry much about my overall budget as long as I'm buying things that I must eat.
For example, here are some of the best prices (I can find) in my area (Midwest USA)
Bananas, not organic: $0.19/lb
Oranges, not organic, though sometimes: ~$0.99/lb
Peach, plum, nectarine, not organic: $0.99/lb
Fresh squeezed, unpasteurized OJ: $7.00/L
Squeezed organic OJ, flash past. OJ : $1.88/L
Cold pressed OO: $7-$8/L
Avocado, not organic: $0.79-0.99/ea
Watermelon: $3.99 ea, variable
Brazil nuts: $2.99/lb when available
Dried figs: $5/lb (not many places have these until late summer months)
And that's all I can remember now.
I do not buy fish around here, and eat mostly eggs. However, after reading a bit about eggs, I will be trying to find a local farmer who pastures his chickens. Anyway, my cost for store eggs are
Eggs, organic, store-bought: $3.29-3.69/doz

How do these prices compare to your location?

Wow, that's very cheap; but I guess you come from a different economy. Minimum wage is $10/hour here.
Bananas here are $.079/lb, and that's the cheapest fruit you can get.
Avocados average $1.30 each, but can go as low as 80 cents or as high as $1.80
Eggs - If you find the really cheap free run eggs they can be $4.50, but are usually $6 for a dozen.
Frozen salmon are usually $7.00 for a lb
EVOO is $10 L if you want something remotely decent.
Pasteurized non-concentrate OJ is $4.00 for 1.89L, although it goes on sale a lot. I usually get Tropicana or Simply Orange.
