How come some people are more susceptible to an addiction/addictive behaviour (alcohol, food, drugs, gambling, other) than others?

I don't think you are going to find an answer to that question.

Not a chemical/brain thing?

Lack of discipline.

The question is why do people not have the discipline to not follow their urges?

For the addict, these urges are insurmountable.

Yes, its a chemical thing.
It depends on how sensitive your brain receptors are to the substances they are susceptible for, and on to what extend this has a 'chain effect' in the brain. Dependence is 'a chemical thing'.
And of course, how you cope with all that is a 'mental thing'.

everything behavioral is a chemical thing... I mean, we are chemical things. I think in some cases there can be reasons why things are the way they are. External reasons.

It's like saying why are some people resonsible and high achievers and others arn't. Or for that matter why are some people nice and some mean. We are just differnt.

Situational factors play a huge part in the development of behaviours.

beforew going raw I used to have a very addictive behavior...never drugs...

but I would say definitely breads, sugars, sweets, starches...
Alcohol...I would have one drink, but then found it hard to stop at just one...felt like a swicth flipped on.

but after having been on my raw foods diet for almost 6 years now I no longer have a problem with addictive behavior of any kind. so i really do believe it wasa chemical thing going on, brought on by the chemicals and substances I was bringing into my body.

Now I will have the very occasional Champagne mimosa (maybe like once every 6 months) but I have no problem sticking to just one glass.

as for breads, starches, etc./..they are gone completely out of my diet...I don't even try to include them

Except when we were in italy last summer i made the mistake of eating some Sardegnan Gnocchi almost every day of our trip....I was soooo bloated and puffy and I just kept wanting more...it was hilarious yet truly awful. I had even brought a complete printout of Wais book in a binder just to have as reminder to stick to her diet...yeah right!!

so needless to say, after vacation.....ZERO starches from now on ...even on vacation

This is gonna sound weird but personally I don't miss cooked food. Or meat, or bread, or anything like that. All I miss is variety. I hate eating the same thing twice in a row.

Missing and being addicted are two different things.

If I was addicted I'd miss it, wouldn't I?

Yes, you would and you would also *need* it.
