Photo Log - post Accutane -> on Accutane

Post by Squash »

Hello everyone,

I've been suffering from acne since the very age of 13. A really cliche age to start developing this skin disorder, I sure realize, and the standard age for the start of puberty and raging hormones. Now, I'm 19 years (I'm a male btw) and am still fighting. Still fighting. If I'd known at 15 years of age that I'd still be dealing with this crap at 19, I don't know what I'd have done, but it wouldn't be pretty.

I've tried, from the age of 13, a very vast amount of treatment options, which include (chronological order):
- Clearasil face wash
- Tea Tree Oil
- Aloe Vera gel
- Benzoyl Peroxide (made my face crack and break out in sun blisters)
- Antibiotics (Doxycycline, never even noticed anything happening)
- Tretinoin creme/Retin-A (this actually kept my acne under control, but made my face oily and red as hell (I guess due to the skin thinning/sun). The sun would destroy my face on this.)
- Accutane (skin was clear after 8 months of 60mg/day. Stopped right there, but acne started to show its head 2 weeks after that. Then, I went on a low maintenance dose of accutane to keep everything under control from summer 2010 to now.)

I'll admit, I haven't tried everything. I haven't tried the exotic treatments like treatments with herbs, acupuncture or whatever those kind of people have at their disposal.

So, for a year, I had basically kept my acne under control using a maintenance dose of Accutane (10mg/day), while eating heaps of protein basically (250g+ a day). I loved meat. However, my face could never tan (still can't, which may be due to the awful effects of long-term use of Tretinoin/Retin-A creme), it itched, I had developed some sort of rosacea on my cheeks, chin and nose, had nosebleeds, etc. During this time, I suffered from VERY DIFFERENT acne than I suffer from now. ALL of my acne were tiny whiteheads under the skin, which took months to surface and actually transform into a regular 'pimple'. Now, I think that could have to do something with the ridiculous amounts of protein I was ingesting (250g+/day), pinching the sebum canals off so badly, that the small amound of sebum (accutane's effects) that tried to come through got blocked immediately, deep in the skin, causing these under-the-skin whiteheads.

I have now been doing the strict 100% Wai diet for 53 days. The first 16 days of the diet, I was still on the Accutane, but I was tired of the side-effects, being dependant on a fucking poisonous drug that probably caused a lot of trouble inside my body (in women it can deform babies, imagine the other internal effects).

The last 37 days I've solely been on the 100% Wai diet. No Accutane. MIND YOU there have been a lot of external factors which could have sent my face raging (like you'll see in the photo soon). In this time I've made two 10-hour airplane trips. The humidity in the airplane (10%, desert-like) and the jet-lag/lack of sleep have had IMMEDIATE effects on my skin. Those weren't coincidental. I've also tried tanning, but went under a WAY TOO POWERFUL tanning bed. It was so hot under there, it almost felt as if my face melted off. Right after that I could feel my face was dehydrated and itchy and an amazing amount of tiny bumps appeared everywhere on my face. Now, I am still hoping this is some kind of heat rash, or allergic reaction to the tanning bed rays. This incident happened a week ago (day 45 on Wai-diet).

I have never photographed my acne before, but I am so sick of this bullshit dominating my life. I really want to give everyone a good look at what's happening to my face and whether the diet is helping me. At everything I'm doing and what I could be doing wrong. *EDIT* The pictures will be of my left cheek. */EDIT*

I really, really appreciate that RRM, after all these years (10+) is still devoting time out of his day to help strangers (hopefully) clear their acne.

Day 1 of Photo Log (Edit: It's a picture of my left cheek)
Day 53 on Wai diet
Day 36 post Accutane

Image

Diet:
- 800 mL Orange Juice 320 kcal - 5g protein
- 5 skinned apples 300 kcal - 2,5g protein
- 20g wild, lean salmon 25 kcal - 4g protein, 1g fat
- 200g sugar 800 kcal - 0g protein
- 150g EVOO 1080 kcal - 0g protein, 150g fat
- 8 organic yolks 460 kcal - 21g protein, 51g fat
- 33g honey (coldly centrifuged) 100 kcal - 0g protein

Totals: 3085 kcal - 32,5g protein - 202g fat - 284g carbs

Routine:
Gently washed face in evening with low-mineral water.

Note: all the food is eating according the rules of the sample diet: 10 meals a days, fat after carbs, 1,5 hours inactivity after big amounts of protein.
Bodystats:
- male
- 6'2''
- 72,3kg/160 lbs

I am thinking I don't eat enough protein. The RDA of the calculator says I should be ingesting 58g of protein. Should I increase yolk/salmon intake? Should I spread that increase over the day or put it all in my big protein meal (so that it contains 35g+ protein in one sitting, rather than 20g)?

Thanks everyone!

The good news is that this is quite normal, as you have not yet fully matured, hormonally.
So, its very likely that you will grow out of it in the next few years.
But maybe not.
Maybe you are an exception like me, still very susceptible to acne at the age of 44.
I hope not.
On the other hand, im actually happy that i still am this much susceptible to acne, as it forces me to stay on this diet.
I am so sick of this bullshit dominating my life. I really want to give everyone a good look at what's happening to my face and whether the diet is helping me.
Good thinking!
Im very happy that you are determined to do what it takes.
Lets see what the results will be...

Yes, you are way beyond the initial 2 weeks sample diet, which supplies you with the amoni acids (protein) minimally required,
but now this is your 'regular' diet, and you need a little more protein than that, indeed.
I would opt for increasing salmon intake, because your body may resent eating more yolks.
Maybe something like 70 grams of salmon daily.
You dont have to meet protein RDA, as protein quality is relatively high,
so that you will meet the RDA for all amino acids.
Should I spread that increase over the day or put it all in my big protein meal (so that it contains 35g+ protein in one sitting, rather than 20g)?
Its not that much, so you can put it all in one meal.

Thanks for your input RRM.

I hate how I can't edit my posts when I need to modify my routine or diet for that day...
