fruits make you fat (according to this quote, that is)

Post by johndela1 »

Anyone know why this would be said:

" Most fruits have quite a low GI. This
is due to the fact that Fructose does not require insulin for
processing, as it does not directly raise blood sugar. Fructose is
immediately converted into triglycerides by the liver. Put simply,
fruit (and honey) is designed to make you fat for the winter lean
months."

it is from: http://www.low-carb.org.uk/fruit.htm

I don't think this is correct.

High GI foods make you put on weight, especially round the middle. So that doesnt make any sense.
They always say fruit makes you put on weight because it is high GI. But I find veg makes me put on weight (fat) and fruit makes me lose it. If I eat just fruit or fruit and nuts I instantly start burning fat, whereas the more veg I eat the more fat I gain.

what do you mean by vegtables? Could you be more specific. I can't imagine brocolli and calliflower making you put on weight.

Do you mean grains and other starches?

No, those foods do not.
It doesnt matter what kind of foods you eat. What matters is how much you consume.

What is insulins role in putting on fat? I've read that if you over ate on say high fat meet that (due to lack on insulin) the extra calories would be excreted. I thought to put on fat you needed insulin. Is that not true?

Here, you already said it yourself. The key word is: "over ate".
If you overeat on whatever food, you gain fat.
Its not the food, its not the GI, its the overeating.

you've taken that out of context

I'm saying somepeople say if extra fat will be past through. Is this impossilbe?

also, is insulin needed in the process of storing body fat?

I'm assuming that eating fat doesn't cause insulin to be secreated. Is this a correct assumption?

With me - yes.

I never eat grains and I haven't eaten starchy veg in about a year.

It's things like lettuce, spinach, kale, broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts.

Jinjee at the gardendiet.com whose raising 4 children on a raw vegan diet, said the same thing. The children eat mostly fruit, nuts, seeds, and she worries about them being too thin so sometimes she tries to fatten them up. She said that the thing that makes them put on weight is eating vegetables. Once her son ate celery every day for a week and put on a lot of weight.

Celery => sodium => water retention => 'water weight'
In reality, celery is negative calories. You burn more calories chewing it than you absorb from it.

Im sorry, i was too much in a hurry yesterday (trying to answer as many questions in too little time), so that I didnt read your question properly...
What is insulins role in putting on fat?
Its required to put on fat and to store glucose.
I've read that if you over ate on say high fat meet that (due to lack on insulin) the extra calories would be excreted. I thought to put on fat you needed insulin. Is that not true?
Elevated levels of any type of energy (glucose, fat, protein, alcohol) stimulates the release of insulin. Insulin indirectly stimulates fat formation by inhibiting the utilization of bodyfat. But only when glycogen depots have been filled up, insulin directly stimulates fat formation.
That is why you can gain fat on any diet (or by consuming alcohol).
I'm saying somepeople say if extra fat will be past through. Is this impossilbe?
Yes, unless these fats are artifical fats that cannot be utilized, or when they are not properly digested (and hence not taken up)
I'm assuming that eating fat doesn't cause insulin to be secreated. Is this a correct assumption?
No.
