I found this on another site. I just browsed through it but I thought some of you would be interested.

Warning, this is a very long read. But, if you really interested in the B12 issue, I strongly recommend that you read it all (perhaps not all in one day, since it's such a time killer ).

It is possible to develop a B-12 deficiency if your diet and lifestyle are not optimized as much as possible, whether you are a vegan, a vegetarian, or a meat eater. B-12 deficiency is in no way vegan specific.

Where there's vitamin B1, there also vitamin B6 and B12.

I will mention only one here: the sample has to be selected in so called STANDARD RANDOM TEST. Unfortunately, this is a specific statistical name, no use for you, as you are not familiar with it. However, let me just tell you that, for example, going to a retreat to interview vegans, is an example of what is NOT a standard random test. A sample has to be randomly drawn from the whole population. The point here is that NO STUDY done on vegans has ever satisifed this very basic condition! This means that there cannot be even an estimate of B12 deficient vegans in the whole population of vegans!!! If we cannot even make an estimate, we certainly cannot claim that we know what that number is!

Cousens could say that he is concerned about B12 status of vegans, or that he has met many who displayed symptoms of B12 deficiency. But, he cannot say (without making a serious error) that "80%" of vegans become B12 deficient, as it is a totally FALSE statement. Furthermore, he cannot say that scientific community came to a conclusion that "80%" of vegans become B12 deficient, as it is a VERY false statement. There does not exist a single journal-published paper that claims that "80%" of vegans become B12 deficient. Of course, it does not exist! Scientific community knows statistics and would not make such a false statement. It may be an unpleasant truth for you to hear, and I was unpleasantly surprised by this discovery, but Cousens (whos book I enjoyed reading) is NOT a scientist and does NOT understand statistics, which is a very basic tool of research.”

Sound studies have been done that found high rates of vitamin B12 deficiency among vegetarians.

Vitamin B12 deficiency was found in 58% of 71 vegetarians studied.

Kwok T et al, Independent effect of vitamin B12 deficiency on hematological status in older Chinese vegetarian women. Am J Hematol. 2002 Jul;70(3):186-90.
119 women older than 55 years who had been vegetarian for more than 3 years were studied. ... Subjects with iron deficiency and those with serum creatinine >150 mmol/L were excluded. ...
The prevalence of definite vitamin B12 deficiency was 42%.

The notion that vegetarian mammals dont ingest B12, is rather silly.
Cow and other mammals don't take B12 form the soil.
As if with the grass they dont ingest numerous insects, worms etc...
Some worms contain extremely high vitamin B12 levels.

Its true that estimated vitamin B12 levels in foods established by other methods are generally too high (44% to 224%), but so are estimated vitamin B12 requirements. The fact remains that levels in plant foods are extremely low, and that vegetarians much more frequently are vitamin B12 deficient.
I could not find a single study dated after 1996 in which Ochromonas malhamensis was used.

However, 4 of those 36 had neurologic complaints...

Also, there is a reason why so many people stop being strictly vegan. And when dietary deficiencies divert you from that lifestyle, only the ones with the highest B12 (and iron) absorption rates remain. A 'selection' that might explain why in many other studies B12 deficiencies are found.

And the amount of bacteria present in the stomachs of ruminant species is MUCH higher than the amount present in human beings, so the quantities of B12 synthetized by friendly-microflora aren´t obviously the same, at all.
