I think it has to do with filling glycogen depots. Between the last meal (dinner?) and breakfast the next day is a far longer time period than between lunch and dinner.

Yes, there is more autophagy involved in the 700 kcal-dinner group as compared to the 700 kcal-breakfast group.
And, indeed, the bad effects of insulin are counteracted by emptying glycogen depots daily;
all extra glucose (from a big meal) is then converted into glycogen instead of keeping insulin high.

Maybe you can find a study that also includes intensive daily work outs.
