Sugars in honey versus sugars in fruit juices

Post by andyville »

Does anybody know if you find the same kind of sugars in honey as you find in fruit juices? If they are different, which food's sugars are best when it comes to keeping blood sugar stable, those in honey or those in juices?

I think they are the same, glucose, fructose and sucrose.

Yes, the sugars in honey are:
34% glucose
39% fructose
2% sucrose

So, its glucose / fructose ratio is 3,4 / 3,9
A combination of both sugars (sucrose = glucose + fructose) supplies you with the sugars you need to be able sustain your blood sugar level perfectly.
Fruit sugars consist of the same sugars, check out the glucose / fructose ratios of some fruits:

ratio glucose / fructose

apples 2,0 / 5,7
pears 1,7 / 6,7
pineapple 2,1 / 2,4
orange 2,3 / 2,6
kiwi 4,3 / 4,6
avocado 0,1 / 0,2
guava 2,1 / 3,4
mango 0,9 / 2,6
peach 1,0 / 1,2
watermelon 2,0 / 3,9
grapes 7,2 / 7,4
raspberries 1,8 / 2,0
strawberries 2,2 / 2,3

mandarin 1,7 / 1,3
muskmelon 1,6 / 1,3
litchi (lychee) 5 / 3,2
papaya (paw paw) 1,0 / 0,3
grapefruit 2,4 / 2,1
banana 3,6 / 3,4
granadilla (passion-fruit) 3,6 / 2,8
apricot 1,7 / 0,9
sweet cherries 6,9 / 6,1
dried dates 25 / 25
dried figs 26 / 24
dried plums 16 / 9
raisin (sultana) 31 / 31
prickly pear (opuntie) 4,9 / 0,1
sapodilla 6 / 6
sapote 3,4 / 1,4
mirabelle 5,1 / 4,3

Oscar and RRM:

As always, thanks for the replies guys!

I am experimenting with the combination of olive oil and honey, and I must say I am experiencing higher energy than I have ever experienced before, over long periods of time. Obviously I am not going anything new here, but just following the Wai idea of eating small, frequent meals of sugar and fat. I guess the reason why honey works incredibly well for me is that it is very easy to bypass the teeth, since it does not spread in the mouth as easily as fruit juice does. This is especially true for honey that you keep in the refrigerator, which becomes quite thick. Another great thing about honey is that it is tremendous for digestion, and also contains a lot of vitamins and minerals. I am lucky enough to be able to buy my honey from a local producer, and I must say it is VERY different from the stuff you buy at the superstore for next to nothing - check it out, Waisters! :)

How is that?
and also contains a lot of vitamins and minerals.
Ehrr, compared to sugar, it does (but that goes for any food compared to sugar), but it doesnt when compared to natural foods.
