Calories in salmon in Nutrient Calculator

Post by DarkGalaxy »

Ok so I was doing some math on how much protein is in 50 g of salmon. I know that:
there are 4 calories in a gram of protein
there are 4 calories in a gram of carbohydrates
there are 9 calories in a gram of fat

So according to the nutrient calculator, there are 71 calories in 50 g of salmon, 9.94999 g protein and 6.80000 g lipid/fat. Now, if I (multiply the protein grams by 4) and (add them to the fat grams times 9) which will be

9.94999 x 4 = 39.8
6.8 x 9 = 61.2
Total = 101 calories

So either the 50 g of salmon has more calories than 71, or it has less fat and/or protein...???

Thats an error.
I have looked it up, and, indeed (according to Souci et al), per 100 gram salmon (averagely) contains 79.6 + 122.4 kcal (101 / 50 g).

Thank you!

So basically the safe amount of animal protein a day for me would be 10 grams or 40 calories from animal protein.

Souci, is that the most reliable source? Some sites have different numbers so it's a little confusing.

In the calculator it says 142kcal (per 100gr) for both USDA and Souci, which is the USDA value for Atlantic Wild Salmon. The Souci value for Atlantic Farmed Salmon apparently wasn't available at the time. I will change that into 202.

As humans are not the same, this is also true for salmons.
Its not about reliability, but about diversity. (both Souci et al and the USDA get their data scientifically)
