Ray Peat and Avocados

Post by sunmaiden »

I'm wondering if anyone has opinions on avocados? I like Ray Peat's writings, and find that he supports many aspects of the wai diet. However, he's very anti-avocado:
Animal proteins, and fruits, because they contain the lowest levels of toxins, should form the basis of the diet. Not all fruits, of course, are perfectly safe--avocados, for example, contain so much unsaturated fat that they can be carcinogenic and hepatotoxic.

I've also found, that of all fruits, avocados do not have a natural stop to them, when eating instinctively (for me)... however, I've been training myself to eat smaller meals, wai style and this makes it easier to have only a partial avocado at a time. Avocados also feel heavy after I've eaten them, and during my time on only fruit, I notice that eating avocados increases cramping during menstruation. (other fruitarians I've talked to say similar things)

Any thoughts, reasons to eat or not include them in this diet? I do find them enjoyable, but wondered what other people's experiences are.

Yeah, he seems to be very anti-unsaturated fats.
I would agree unsaturated fats are not good when they have been processed in some way, but when in their whole form as in avocados, fish, egg yolks, they should be fine. If you like avocados - eat them ;)
