WaiWiki?

Post by dime »

Have you considered having a wiki, where all information related to the diet can be nicely presented, and can be easily modified by anyone (with admin approval of course)?

The forum is nice for discussing and asking for help, but for someone new looking for information there's just too much noise in my opinion.

Yes, we considered that.
And yes, we want it, but it takes time create it.
Maybe something you can do?
You are relatively new, so that your view is relatively 'fresh'.
In the meantime, im deleting as much noise as i have time to do so.

I could help setting up trac for example (http://trac.edgewall.org/), I use it locally as a personal wiki and it works great. I checked and it has a plugin which connects it to the phpbb database, so users can simply login to the wiki with their forum account. All you need for trac to work is Python.
There are a few blog plugins, this could be useful in the case of "Diet Diaries" for example, I think writing a diary in a blog-like fashion is much better than in a forum.

Ehrr, Dime, i dont know anything about Python and trac, but Oscar does.
I think that a Wiki would be great, so im all for it, but only as a real Wiki, and not for diet diaries,
as i think that it would be much easier to find info if the Wiki is restricted to info about the diet only (and not about users).
Dont you think?

Oh ok then, we wait for Oscar's attention :-)
The blog would look something like this http://www.coderesort.com/about/blog , I mean it would be a separate thing from the wiki. But it was just a suggestion, you know best whether it fits or not.

Ah, ok, seperate...
Then it could be nice; blogs for lots of Wai people all in one place,
but dont you think people on Wai have blogs on other places already?
you know best whether it fits or not
No, i dont, because i dont know about developments in that kind of stuff like you do, for instance,
so that i dont know what could be fitting.
Only once i know how things work, i can have an informed opinion about it, no?
So i try to extract that info from you...

;)
Can you make some kind of an example page, so we can get some kind of idea how it'll look and work?

You don't need to know anything about Python, that's what you need to have installed so that the wiki can work.

A bunch of websites using trac are listed here: http://trac.edgewall.org/wiki/TracUsers

For example check http://www.phpbms.org/
Seems that you can edit this page http://www.phpbms.org/wiki/PhpbmsFaq ("Edit this page" at the bottom), so you can see how the markup looks like. It's pretty simple and much better than writing static HTML code.

Some more nice examples:
http://trac.adium.im/
http://wiki.goodrobot.com/
http://developer.pidgin.im/

Dime,
I think a wiki would be the answer to all the outdated pages.
So, whats the best option?
Ive read about dokuwiki.org, mediawiki.org, phpwiki.sourceforge.net, pmwiki.org and wikkawiki.org
It seems that dokuwiki is most úser-friendly' for both the administrator and the user.
mediawiki is also used by wikipedia.
Our host has both docuwiki and mediawiki available for automatic installation.
How does that compare to Stac?

Our host also has Webpress available (weblog),
so we could use that for dietdairies?

@Oscar: check this out: http://www.dds.nl/helpdesk/cat.php?cat=hosting&id=2

I think mediawiki is pretty nice, we are all familiar with wikipedia :) I've been doing some edits on wikipedia too, and using it seems pretty easy (all wikis have similar markup anyway..).

The dokuwiki is not listed here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_wikis

Personally (even on my machine) I'm using the trac, but this is more for software projects and the like so I think not so suitable for this purpose.

What about this: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension ... ntegration
So that those registered on the forum can login to the wiki?
You just need to set the rights to some minimum editing rights that requires approval by the administrator before it's published.
This seems to explain how to setup the user groups/rights: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Us ... management

Cool, I really like this idea! Imagine the potential.

But the references need to be at the bottem, I think that looks neater and is more like the official wiki way. Am I free to change it?

I actually prefer them to be right at the spot, so that you can immediately get to the related pubmed summary or free article.
Where wikipedia has its "puzzle-earth" as its logo, I would love to have this orange as ours. What do you think?

Hehe nice idea about the logo!

I also like the reference links right at the spot, plus I think putting them down might be more work because you need to also properly format the citation.
