Digestive issues with fish
I sometimes have trouble with fish, often fatty fish like mackerel, salmon...The worst time was with shrimp in Vietnam, was sick during one week, horrible abdominal pain (spasms). I also have had some trouble with old fatty meat.
Yesterday it was with a small tuna (melva). It got hypersalivation and stomach pain a few minutes after ingestion. Prior I had already eaten this fatty fish several times without problem.
I have always thought that I have a low stomach acid.
This is a recurrent problem for me.
Any idea of the causes and the way to improve this ?
Thank you.

Re: Digestive issues with fish
Maybe the fish was just bad?
Re: Digestive issues with fish
It tasted like the other fish. what about pollution ?
Re: Digestive issues with fish
My guess is that the fish was just bad, but I'm not 100% sure.
Re: Digestive issues with fish
Shrimp is not fatty at all, so i think Oscar is right.
Most shrimp are not safe to eat raw.
BTW, many pollutants are hard to detect by tasting.

Re: Digestive issues with fish
So by "bad", you mean polluted ?
Re: Digestive issues with fish
The shrimp may have been contaminated with Vibrio parahaemolyticus, for example,
as many prawns are shallow water scavengers,
which is why they accumulate toxins occurring in shallow waters.

Thank you.RRM wrote:The shrimp may have been contaminated with Vibrio parahaemolyticus, for example,

Can wild fish also be contaminated ?
I had troubles with wild salmon (in Canada), mackerel and lately melva (small tuna).
And what about crabs ? are they safe to eat raw ?
Re: Digestive issues with fish
Yes, some fish are very much prone to contain such toxins, and its therefore considered dangerous to eat these raw.fred wrote: Can wild fish also be contaminated ?
These are unlikely to contain such toxins, so mabey the issue is a different one.I had troubles with wild salmon (in Canada), mackerel and lately melva (small tuna).
Not very safe. And what about crabs ? are they safe to eat raw ?

Re: Digestive issues with fish
to see if it is because of low stomach acid, take some apple cider vinegar with your next fish meal (don't eat anything else with it), and see how it goes.
if it goes smoothly post back ill go into detail how to increase your stomach acid naturally
if not it's not got to do with low stomach acid probably.

Re: Digestive issues with fish
Some years ago I took betaine HCL. I could take 15 or more pills without heartburn. I don't remember to have had any drastic improvement, but I stopped because it gave me pimples.panacea wrote:to see if it is because of low stomach acid, take some apple cider vinegar with your next fish meal (don't eat anything else with it), and see how it goes.
