Young Coconut Water

Post by Monica714 »

Hello RRM ~ I LOVE this stuff and drink it like juice with the coconut meat as my fat source. Do you know of any negative effects consuming large quantities per day (instead of fresh squeezed juice)? I believe that it has high levels of minerals, especially magnesium? Would you recommend this as a juice substitute?
I look forward to your reply!
Regards,
Monica

Hi Monica,

Lost your old suit's password? (want it back?)
Coconut may be VERY high in selenium, and too much is not good, though actual uptake depends on effectiveness of the individual feedback system regarding selenium uptake.
Levels of other minerals are much more moderate (see http://www.3.waisays.com/nutrients.htm )

If you feel perfectly well (physically) drinking that stuff, go ahead. But maybe you might consider taking a blood test regarding selenium, just to make sure.

Or maybe you saw my history on your end? I am actually fine keeping my current Monica714 name now that I live in The O.C. :D I actually found your site way back in 2002 & still follow it fairly closely. Maybe now is an appropriate time to thank you & Wai for having such an amazing impact on my diet & long-term health! :P I deeply appreciate both of your time, dedication & valuable research more than you could ever know. VERY cool that you have kept this site going for so many years. Ok, back on topic.....Coconuts & selenium. Brazil nuts are also high in selenium, yes? Coconuts have even more maybe. I was under the impression that higher doses of selenium are a good thing (serves as an antioxidant). Pardon me, but I am a bit of an extremist. I will try to cut the coconut juice down a bit. THANKS AGAIN :D

Hi monica!

Got this:
Too much selenium can be harmful. The difference between an optimal and toxic dose is small. The safe upper limit for adults is 400 micrograms a day. Doses of 1,000 micrograms or more a day can cause nausea, vomiting, hair loss, and other problems.

Coconut & Selenium

Thank you Avalon! :D
I just looked it up and found that there are 2.4 mcg selenium per 8oz cup of coconut water.

Antioxidants are molecules with such properties that they readily interact with certain oxidative radicals (which is good), but also on healthy cells, and the metabolism of various tissues (which may be bad).
Also see my post regarding beta-carotene (also an anti-oxidant) in carrot juice.

The levels of selenium in coconuts vary greatly. The number you found may be 100-fold higher in other coconuts.
Souci et al found levels up to 810 microgram / 100 gram coconut. (Food composition and nutrition tables, medpharm scientific publishers, page 942)

Seems like we need our own labs to do research.
