Re: Menstruation struggle

In pharmacology, selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRis) have well-established efficacy for severe premenstrual syndrome.
They are 'selective' in that they have only a very weak affinity for the other monoamines (noradrenaline, dopamine).
SSRIs increase (extracellular) serotonine levels by inhibiting its reuptake into the presynaptic cell, increasing the level of serotonin in the synaptic cleft available to bind to the postsynaptic receptor.
Egg yolks are extremely high in cholesterol, which has been shown to indirectly activate the postsynaptic receptors for serotonine,
which in the end has similar effects as SSRis.

Cholesterol stabilizes the serotonin(1A) receptor. Saxena R et al
The characteristics of serotonin(1A) receptors are altered in cholesterol-depleted cells. Saxena R et al
Cholesterol binding sites are inherent characteristic features of serotonin(1A) receptors and are conserved through natural evolution Paila YD et al
All ligands exhibit higher binding energies when docked to the receptor in the presence of cholesterol, thereby implying that membrane cholesterol facilitates ligand binding to the serotonin(1A) receptor. Paila YD et al
The Smith-Lemli-Opitz Syndrome (SLOS) is a syndrome associated with defective cholesterol biosynthesis. Ligand binding activity, G-protein coupling and downstream signaling of serotonin(1A) receptors are impaired in SLOS-like condition. Paila YD et al
