Protein deficiency leads to water retention?

Post by fictor »

I came across several articles claiming that protein deficiency
can cause fluid retention. Also, countless articles claims that
high carbohydrate intake causes fluid retention.

Can you, RRM, please explain why you recommend the opposite
(low protein intake, high carb intake) to fight fluid retention?
I know it is explained on the wai site, but I do not feel that I
(yet) have a good enough understanding of chemistry and
bio-chemistry to understand it fully. Could you please try to
simplify as much as possible, and give me some good references?

Thank you very much! :)

Yes, thats why we also warn against consuming too little energy/protein.
Recently, this was discussed at length in this thread:

Yes, but these are complex carbs, present in grains and beans.
Simple carbs cannot cause water retention as the blood glucose level is very strictly regulated (+/- 30%), as opposed to the blood and lymphe protein level (up to 900% fluctuation)
Could you please try to simplify as much as possible, and give me some good references?
For which statement exactly would you like a reference?

Are there no complex carbs in fruits?
And what about vegetables?

I did not mean to sound like I do not believe what you say :)

I will read the Wai-book more closely one more time, and
then come back to the topic if anything is still un-clear
to me. Thanks.

Sure, but in fruits, the sugars are mostly simple sugars.
If sugars are mostly complex sugars, only then will this have a substantial impact on the uptake of complex sugars-particles into the blood (so that they may cause water retention).
And what about vegetables?
Except for vegetables (roots) such as carrots, radishes and parsnip, most vegetables contain more complex sugars relative to simple sugars.

I know that; I just genuinely asked you. :)
