What happens if you don't eat animal food for a day?
Any harmful effects? I forgot that I don't have any more eggs or fish left. And the shops are all closed now. All I can find in my living room is 3 Brazil nuts. I guess it's better than nothing. Do brazil nuts contain cholesterol?
Just to be clear, when you consume animal food, how long does it take for the cholesterol and B12 from it to be used up by the body? I know that when you don't consume sufficient sugars, your body will convert muscle protein for energy. What about animal food?
How many eggs or fish do I have to eat the next day to make up for today? My usual intake is 4 egg yolks or 120g of salmon.

If you consume protein abundantly; nothing.Kookaburra wrote:What happens if you don't eat animal food for a day? Any harmful effects?
If your protein intake is very strictly topped, you will lose some muscle mass.
Not much; about 100 gram.
No, but you can surely miss out on cholesterol occasionally.Do brazil nuts contain cholesterol?
No problem at all.
B12 lasts very long (as it is stored), so that you can easily go with B!2 for quite a while.how long does it take for the cholesterol and B12 from it to be used up by the body?
Your body also produces cholesterol, so that a lack of dietary cholesterol can only result in depression, sleeplessness, aggression etc.
Twice as much, but if you are susceptible to acne, it may result in acne. How many eggs or fish do I have to eat the next day to make up for today?
Re: What happens if you don't eat animal food for a day?
A full store of B12 can last 5-10 years or so, since up to 75% of the used B12 is recycled. And we only need very little.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that if you continue as normal tomorrow you won't notice a thing.

What about other vitamins? Are they used up within 24 hours? What is so special about B12 that it can be stored for so long?

No, not that fast.Kookaburra wrote:What about other vitamins? Are they used up within 24 hours?
It takes many days at least.
A combination of factors. What is so special about B12 that it can be stored for so long?
1) We cannot make this vitamin ourselves at all (many vitamins can be made by the body to some extend).
2) We need only a tiny little bit daily (so that being able to store it makes definitely a difference)
3) Its present in a very limited number of foods (only animal food)
4) In nature we may have gone without animal food for many days

Then why do we have to make sure we meet the minimum requirements in the nutrient calculator for each day?RRM wrote:No, not that fast.Kookaburra wrote:What about other vitamins? Are they used up within 24 hours?

Because the goal is to be optimal, and get used to that. If circumstances make things less optimal then that's less of a problem. Besides, we always stress the RDA is too high anyway.

Also, what if I eat double amount of salmon/egg yolks? For example, today I ate 8 egg yolks(normally I eat 4). Is it okay not to consume any animal food the next day since I consume double today?
Re: What happens if you don't eat animal food for a day?
I used to consume just enough protein to sustain my muscles.Kookaburra wrote: What do you mean by strictly topped?
My protein intake was 133 gram daily and not a gram more,
which was just enough, given the high level physical activity work that i do.
So that when i did not eat animal food for a day, this resulted in some loss of muscle mass immediately.
Sure, but the protein is more effectively utilized when spread over 2 days instead of one.what if I eat double amount of salmon/egg yolks? For example, today I ate 8 egg yolks(normally I eat 4).

Just for clarification I wonder, when you write 133 grams protein, then you mean after using the calculator, not 133 grams raw meat or fish or yolk?
