grain-fed vs grass-fed sight difference?
Here in the philippines most local beef is grass-fed, but when you ask the vendor they don't know.
is there a way to tell healthy beef from unhealthy beef? I know grain-fed beef has a lot of marbling, is there any other indicators?

Re: grain-fed vs grass-fed sight difference?
What do you mean healthy and unhealthy? What is unhealthy beef?
Re: grain-fed vs grass-fed sight difference?
I think beef is more healthy if it's grass-fed as it has a superior omega balance.
Re: grain-fed vs grass-fed sight difference?
More healthy as in the cow is healthier, or the meat is healthier for you?
Grass and grain-fed meat differ very little in the omega balance, and I can't imagine that this would affect your health significantly.
You'd get a lot more omega imbalance from the olive oil you put in the juice than from eating grain-fed beef..

n-6/n-3 ratio (grass fed vs grain fed)
Crossbred steers [1] 1.77 vs 8.99
Crossbred steers [2] 3.72 vs 5.73
Mixed cattle 2.78 vs 13.6
Angus steers [1] 1.72 vs 10.38

Simmental bulls 2.04 vs 8.34
Hereford steers 1.44 vs 3.00

Olive oil - 12.82
Re: grain-fed vs grass-fed sight difference?
True, and that's one of the reasons I don't use olive oil.
Overkees can tell you the same story.
So I do think it can affect your health significantly.
I've noticed very good results when I changed my n-6/n-3 ratio from around 8 to 1.Grass and grain-fed meat differ very little in the omega balance, and I can't imagine that this would affect your health significantly.

Re: grain-fed vs grass-fed sight difference?
eating factory raised grain-fed beef has consistently made me sick. i eat the fat though too so that prolly made the most impact
Re: grain-fed vs grass-fed sight difference?
Alot of toxins accumlate in fatty tissues. Cows arent meant to eat grains, so they will accumalte alot of toxins in their fat.
Re: grain-fed vs grass-fed sight difference?
Toxins from grains? Like what toxins?
But anyway there's not much point in arguing about this, if grain fed makes you sick but grass fed doesn't, then it's obvious which one you should eat.
I myself haven't noticed any difference, nor am I convinced that there's any significant difference, so I don't bother much about it. Sometimes I get grain-fed from the super market, sometimes grass-fed from the farmers market.

Mycotoxins
Re: grain-fed vs grass-fed sight difference?
the grain-fed cows are often pumped full of antibiotics and hormones
Re: grain-fed vs grass-fed sight difference?
Maybe in the Philipines, in the EU I think hormones are banned. And when they are used it's for dairy cows only if I remember correctly (but in the EU not even this allowed).
Mycotoxins can be found in grass too, from http://www.knowmycotoxins.com/ruminant.htm

The greatest exposure to toxins from moulds for cows comes from the forage they consume (grass, hays, silages). Most ruminants are maintained on pasture-based production systems around the world – where the climate permits such practises. Grazing systems are not safe from mycotoxin contamination - fresh grasses can be contaminated with several mycotoxins. These typically include fungal endophytes that produce mycotoxins, which protect the plant in some way, such as ergovaline and lolitrem B, as well as Fusarium mycotoxins, such as zearalenone or DON. Perhaps the most commonly recognised mycotoxicoses problem is that seen with Lolitrem infected ryegrass – which causes ‘ryegrass staggers’ (loss of co-ordination) in cattle.
Re: grain-fed vs grass-fed sight difference?
As far as I know they also get to eat ground up cow corpses/bones/etc, so accumulation of (natural) toxins can happen that way too (which seems more harmful to me than grains vs grass). Maybe this has changed in recent years, but I'm not sure.
